English Building Market
You know Limbo, that funky Chapel Street shop featuring eclectic antiques and home goods? Well, owner Maria Freda has joined forces with landscape architect Carol Orr and Sue Rollins, to transform 839 Chapel Street into The English Building Market. With artfully arranged displays, curiosities (antique typewriters and film projectors) and a vast array of artwork mixed in for good measure, the content and space speak for themselves."Every piece is as diverse as the customer; there's something here for everyone, every style and every budget," says Freda, a member of the Limbo and English Building Markets Co-op. Featured pieces include a collection of oriental rugs, couches, mirrors, nightstands and much more.Whatever you need or want can be found here, regardless of your design sensibilities and personal taste. Lovers of midcentury, modern moguls and shabby-chic types will all be able to find that perfect piece, also known as "it," at the English Building Market.
What's the secret to opening a shop like this? Start with a unique idea for a business, find an interesting storefront in an up-and-coming part of the city, visit a few tag sales, select five distinctive vendors and display it all in a visually interesting way. That eye for style and sense of space has been a successful combination for this trio of entrepreneurs. Open just under a year and a half, the English Building Market is already a favorite among design junkies and vintage enthusiasts. The owners believe the Market's early success is part of the neighborhood's steady renewal ."New Haven is going through a lot of changes. It's a community that is starting to simmer, and we want to be a part of the fire on Chapel St."
