Devil's Gear II
If you’ve lived or worked in New Haven for a while—or if you’ve read the recent New Haven Advocate story—then you’ve probably noticed the incredible number of people who choose cycling as their main mode of transport. Here’s what we bet you didn’t know: New Haven has a greater percentage of people who bicycle to work than any other major city in the northeast. Elm City cyclists can be pretty passionate about pedal power, but whether they’re hard core competitors, weekend enthusiasts or just folks who need to get from Point A to Point B in the greenest way possible, everyone understands the importance of keeping your wheels merrily rolling along. The key is good maintenance, a little TLC and having a great local place where you can get a flat fixed or a tube replaced. Come March 8,we’ll all be sitting a little prettier in our saddles because New Haven bike icon, The Devil’s Gear, is opening a second location at 97 Audubon Street.
Founded in 2001, the original Devil’s Gear (433 Chapel Street) is New Haven’s premiere independently-owned bicycle retailer, carrying bicycles and accessories for all types and levels of riders. Located in the heart of the Audubon Arts & Retail District, The Devil’s Gear II will offer riders everything they need to keep their wheels turning season to season. Simple repairs, lights, tires and inner tubes will all be available at the new shop, along with the same casual vibe, friendly service and cycle know-how that fans of the flagship store have come to expect from owner Matthew J. Feiner and his staff. An avid rider since childhood and a something of a local celebrity, Feiner was called the Bicycle Laureate of New Haven by the Hartford Courant in 2004.When asked about opening a second location in town, Feiner said he seized the opportunity to meet a demand for a convenient location that serves New Haven cyclists.
A winner of the 2007 New Haven Advocate Reader’s Poll for Best Bicycle Shop, the Devil’s Gear is also a proud sponsor of the Town Green District’s Bicycle Ambassador program. The Devil’s Gear II celebrated its March 8th opening with water bottle giveaways and a chance to win a free tune-up. So grab a friend, get in gear and come on over! It would be a sin to miss all the fun.
