From Pulitzer Prize winners to world premieres, New Haven bears the birthrights to more all-star productions than you’ll find anywhere outside the bright lights of Broadway. Theatre-goers are guaranteed to find top-tier talent at New Haven’s legendary Shubert Theatre, where countless star-studded casts have graced the stage since its curtain first went up in 1914. Now, over 100 years later, crowds are still flocking to the Shubert each season for the return of contemporary favorites such as The Book of Mormon, Les Misérables, and Jersey Boys, as well as classic tales like The Nutcracker and Annie. And then there’s Yale Repertory Theatre, or “The Rep” as its dedicated followers like to call it – a hallmark of American theater and breeding ground for Broadway productions (11, to be exact).

Catch a show inside the repurposed cathedral on Church St. when the University is session, from October through May — and you just might see the same production in lights around the globe one day. The quirky Long Wharf Theatre is another storied stage worth spending an evening, where the waterfront views are always a nice addition to the show and past playbills have showcased stars the likes of Steve Martin and Sam Waterston.
