October is Pizza Month: Celebrate in the Nation’s Captial

Tens of thinly crusted, steaming hot apizzas have left the oven since you started reading this sentence. Do you know where your dinner is?

October marks the return of National Pizza Month to our collective community calendar, and for the first time in our long-measured, coal-fired history, we’re celebrating the holiday as the congressionally declared National Pizza Capital. Back in May of this year, U.S. Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, representing Connecticut’s Third District, entered a statement into the Congressional Record declaring “New Haven the Pizza Capital of the United States.” The historic proclamation honored the thousands of Connecticut families and locals who have devoted their lives to crafting America’s best pizza. 

Fast forward to October, when neighbors across New Haven will share pies at tables, across bar tops, and on couches – or in a personal pizza palace. The palace in question is among Airbnb’s 1% most unique places to stay, and it’s located right here in the Elm City. 

The Apizza Airbnb, @pizzabnb on Instagram, is located on State Street and features vintage pizza props and decor, including nostalgic Chuck-E-Cheese posters and the red Coca-Cola cups from your youth. And if you’re not sold already, the Apizza Airbnb is within walking distance of our city’s most iconic pizzerias like Modern Apizza and Michelina’s on State, and a short drive to Sally’s, Frank Pepe’s, and Zeneli’s.

The apizza palace is built for few, and bookings are scarcer than a line-free day at Sally’s. So, what are the rest of us doing to honor the foodies’ favorite month? Take a guess. 

This month, pies will be flying out of the ovens across our apizza community; and the best thing about New Haven…they are all worth your reservation (or delivery fee, you do you)

In truth, this rings true during every month of the year, but in honor of the holiday, we encourage you to eat outside the box. Except for the pizza, keep that in the box. If you’re faithful to plain cheese or married to the meat lover pie, here are a few well-loved apizza iterations we’re cooking up this month. 

Sally’s “Firebird,” with mozzarella, Sally’s tomato sauce, oven roasted chicken, diced sweet and hot peppers, and onion. 

Modern’s “Clams Casino” with bacon and red peppers. 

Frank Pepe’s “Amanti Della Carne,” with crushed tomato, mozzarella, meatballs, pepperoni, sausage, and bacon. 

BAR’s “Mashed Potato and Bacon,” served just as it sounds. Deliciously.
