Zeppole Season Hits Wooster Square! A Sweet Slice of History

Forget the winter blues because springtime in New Haven means one thing: zeppole! Those glorious fried dough puffs of deliciousness, officially known as Zeppole di San Giuseppe, are back, and we’re here to tell you where to find the best in town.

Here’s a snapshot of the history of the celebratory pastry. Zeppole are traditionally made to celebrate the Feast of St. Joseph (San Giuseppe), on March 19th. Legend has it that when St. Joseph had to flee to Egypt with the Holy Family, he worked as a carpenter and sold fritters to support them. Later, in medieval Sicily, a drought led to prayers for St. Joseph’s intercession, and when rain arrived, the grateful people prepared a feast with offerings, including these fried pastries. This tradition, deeply rooted in Italian culture, has been lovingly carried on for centuries, and it’s a testament to faith, family, and community. In Italy, March 19th is also observed as Father’s Day.

Back to New Haven Zeppole, think light, airy pastry, often filled with creamy custard or ricotta and dusted with powdered sugar. It’s a taste of Italy right here in our backyard and a tradition we wholeheartedly embrace, especially here in Wooster Square, the heart of New Haven’s Italian heritage.  Look no further than Wooster Square’s pastry royalty to snag the confections:
