Wooster Square Park is one of the first places spring shows up in the city. For a short stretch each April, the Yoshino cherry trees around the park come into bloom, drawing residents from across New Haven. Each year, that window sets the stage for a neighborhood-wide celebration.
The 52nd Cherry Blossom Festival returns Sunday, April 19, from 12–4:30 PM, with live music, over thirty food vendors, children’s activities, and special programming throughout the park.
This year’s festival acknowledges the neighborhood’s rich Italian heritage, with Marc-Anthony Massaro, the sculptor behind Wooster Square’s monument, “Indicando la Via al Futuro,” sharing the inspiration behind the work and its role in honoring the Italian American journey. Additional highlights include a walking photo tour of “The Lost Wooster Square” and the opportunity to step inside St. Michael’s Church on a guided tour.
Bloom timing shifts each year, but the park is worth visiting at every stage, from early buds to full bloom. Strong bloom is expected during the festival window, with updates shared on the Wooster Square Blossom Blog on Facebook and Instagram.
Bring a chair or blanket and plan to spend the afternoon moving through the park, from the main lawn to the outer paths. When you’re ready, step off the park and head onto Wooster Street for dinner.
