Black History Month 2024

February marks Black History Month, a period of remembrance for the critical figures and events that have shaped our national identity. Within the great umbrella of American Black History, the city of New Haven has several historic pillars of our own. At the New Haven Museum, visitors and locals can explore the history of the Amistad Affair through the exhibit “The Amistad Story: Cinque Lives Here.” The permanent exhibit chronicles the events of the revolt and subsequent legal case, a defining moment in the anti-slavery movement. Gioa Adds Joy to Wooster Street

If you have a taste for Italian cuisine, then be sure to check out Gioia in January. This new Italian restaurant is serving some of the best dishes and drinks, all from the heart of the historic Wooster Square. The restaurant, which also serves up house-made gelato for diners with a sweet tooth,  features a market selling tons of Italian specialties from homemade pastries to the best-aged cheeses.

Tavern on State Honored by The New York Times

One of downtown’s most popular restaurants, Tavern on State, was featured in The New York Times, leading the “23 of the Best American Dishes of 2023.” Writer Julia Moskin specifically praised the tavern’s fried chicken, saying “I will always order the fried chicken at a promising new restaurant like this one. Its fried chicken thighs with green tomato relish and radish salad was the best of many dishes I loved this year in the growing “tavern” category — a much-needed bridge between pub grub and tweezer food.”

Elm City’s Finest [2023]

On Saturday, October 14, the Shubert Theatre will present its second annual Elm City’s Finest, a very special performance series highlighting the amazing artists of the New Haven community. Last year’s inaugural event showcased talent from nearly every artistic form—music, dance, spoken word, visual art, and more. In the spirit of accessibility and community togetherness, the event is built on a “pay what you wish” system, requiring a minimum of $10 per ticket, but inviting attendees to support to whatever degree they can. New Haven Chalk Art Festival [2023]

On October 21, local artists will convene in Downtown for the annual New Haven Chalk Art Festival. Taking place from 12-4 PM at The Shops at Yale, the day will be one marked by live music, impressive art, and family-friendly entertainment.
