August marks the return of two beloved festivals to the New Haven Green: the Puerto Rican Festival of New Haven and the Black Wall Street Festival. Both are free to attend and together they create one of the richest consecutive weekends for cultural celebration in the city.
First up, the 10th Annual Puerto Rican Festival of New Haven. Hosted on the New Haven Green in the heart of downtown, the two-day festival kicks off on Friday, August 7, at 6 p.m. with a concert featuring Free-style artist Lisette Melendez and continues on Saturday, August 8, from 1 to 9 p.m. with a full-day festival culminating with a concert featuring La India. Throughout the day on Saturday, attendees can enjoy live music, salsa dancing, cultural performances, and authentic Puerto Rican cuisine.
For generations, the festival has brought together residents and visitors to celebrate the traditions, stories, and contributions of New Haven’s Puerto Rican community. What started as a small neighborhood gathering has grown into one of the largest Puerto Rican cultural celebrations in the region, drawing thousands each year to honor the island’s music, history, and pride in an atmosphere that feels equal parts block party and cultural homecoming.
The following Saturday, August 15, from 12 to 8 p.m., the 5th Annual Black Wall Street Festival transforms the New Haven Green into one of Connecticut’s largest celebrations of Black entrepreneurship, culture, and community. Attendees can shop more than 300 Black- and Brown-owned businesses, purchase food from local chefs, browse art and handcrafted goods, and enjoy a full day of live music, fashion showcases, and family-friendly activities.
Founded by New Haven’s The Breed Ent., the festival draws inspiration from Tulsa’s historic Black Wall Street and celebrates Black entrepreneurship while expanding economic opportunity in New Haven. Launched in 2022 inside Temple Street Plaza with 35 vendors, the festival moved to the New Haven Green the following year and grew to 250 participating businesses by 2025. Organizers expect this year’s fifth annual festival to be its biggest yet, offering another opportunity to experience the businesses, talent, and creative energy shaping New Haven today.
Together, these two festivals showcase the cultures, communities, and creativity that continue to shape New Haven. Make plans to experience one or both this August on the New Haven Green.
