Each summer, New Haven trades its usual rhythm for something a bit more European: open-air performances spilling into public squares, late-night conversations after concerts, and entire weekends built around wandering from one cultural experience to the next.
Now in its 31st year, the International Festival of Arts & Ideas runs throughout June and brings with it a wave of free and ticketed programming to the Elm City, including performances, conversations, and concerts. The event attracts more than 100,000 attendees each year, and in 2026, was named the #3 Best Art Festival in the nation by USA Today 10BEST. This year’s lineup centers around the theme of “Home & Belonging,” inspired by the iconic novel The House on Mango Street, the city’s Juneteenth celebrations, and neighborhood festivals from a city home to more than 100 languages.
Arts & Ideas will take place alongside the first-ever Downtown New Haven Summer Art Stroll. Running from June 13-28, the self-guided stroll invites locals and visitors alike to experience the culture of Connecticut’s most vibrant city and support local businesses and artists. In other words: it’s the closest thing to stumbling through a European art district, without needing to renew your passport.
