Fall is one of the best times to explore New Haven, with changing leaves across the city’s parks, neighborhoods and Yale campus. Connecticut DEEP’s 2026 foliage forecast estimates peak color in the New Haven area from October 28 through November 3, although timing can shift depending on weather.
Whether you want to take in the view from above, walk wooded trails or see the season while exploring the city, there are plenty of ways to experience fall in New Haven.
Downtown and Yale
Walk beneath the changing leaves through Downtown and Yale, where the New Haven Green, historic streets and Yale’s campus put some of the city’s best fall color right in the center of the action. Along the way, visit a museum, take in the architecture or stop into the shops and eateries that are all within a few blocks of one another.
East Rock Park
Hike to the summit of East Rock Park, taking in the fall foliage along the way before reaching panoramic views of New Haven and New Haven Harbor. Once you’ve made your way back down, head into the East Rock neighborhood, where independent eateries and shops offer plenty of options for lunch and an afternoon of exploring.
West Rock Park
Hit the trails at West Rock Park, where fall color stretches along the ridge and the South Overlook offers sweeping views across New Haven. On your way back, stop at Judges Cave, then head into nearby Westville, where independent restaurants, shops and galleries center around the neighborhood’s village-like commercial district.
Wooster Square
Take a walk through Wooster Square Park, where fall color fills the park and the tree-lined streets of New Haven’s historic Little Italy. Continue onto Wooster Street, where the neighborhood’s Italian roots are still part of the experience. Stop for apizza, grab an espresso and pastry, browse one of the Italian markets, or pick up something to take home.
