Lighthouse Point Park is temporarily closed following a powerful storm that caused extensive damage across the park on Thursday, August 13.
More than 50 trees were downed or heavily damaged throughout the park, with fallen trees, branches, and debris creating hazardous conditions across the grounds. Strong winds also pushed sand onto portions of the boardwalk and scattered debris, including broken glass, throughout the park.
The historic carousel building sustained significant structural damage, including shattered windows and damage to an exterior corner of the building. The structure was also shifted from its foundation. The historic carousel inside appears to have escaped major damage.
The City of New Haven is assessing conditions and working to clear debris and address safety hazards. There is currently no reopening date, and Lighthouse Point Park will remain closed while cleanup and repairs continue.
Visitors should not attempt to enter the park during the closure.
