Stars Hollow may get the gazebo, Luke’s Diner and Friday-night town meetings, but some of Rory Gilmore’s biggest chapters belong to New Haven. Yale becomes the setting for the next stage of her life, and over four seasons, New Haven is woven into the friendships, romances, ambitions and detours that take Rory from college freshman to Yale graduate.
Now it’s your turn to follow in her footsteps. Grab a coffee, naturally, and spend a day like Rory with four stops inspired by her New Haven years.
Stop 1: Yale Visitor Center
Start with a tour of Yale’s campus for a closer look at the history and architecture behind Rory’s fictional college years. The Yale Visitor Center offers guided tours led by Yale students, taking you through campus and some of its best-known spaces.
Stop 2: Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library
Channel Rory’s love of books at the Beinecke, home to one of the world’s largest collections of rare books and manuscripts, including a Gutenberg Bible. The library itself is worth the stop, with its distinctive marble exterior and six-story glass tower of books at the center.
Stop 3: Chapel Street
Head to Chapel Street, where the Yale University Art Gallery and Yale Center for British Art are both free to visit. From there, grab a coffee, browse the shops and spend some time exploring Downtown.
Stop 4: Claire’s Corner Copia
Rory would have needed a regular spot off campus, and Claire’s Corner Copia feels like an obvious choice. A New Haven institution since 1975, the vegetarian restaurant sits across from Yale’s Old Campus at Chapel and College streets and has been feeding generations of Yale students and New Haveners for more than 50 years.
Stop in for lunch, coffee or a slice of Claire’s famous Lithuanian coffee cake. This is one stop we’re adding to Rory’s New Haven story ourselves.
