For more than a century, the Shubert Theatre has been part of New Haven’s cultural life, rooted in a connection to Broadway that runs deep. Still, the 2026-27 season makes the case for looking beyond Broadway. The Shubert’s upcoming lineup moves from musicals and ballet to comedy, family favorites and more intimate nights out. In other words: there’s probably more happening behind those doors than you think.
So, we sat down with Anthony Lupinacci of the Shubert Theatre to chat about all things new this season and how to build a night around your next show.
The Shubert and Broadway go back more than a century. What are you most excited about this season?
All five of our Broadway shows have received a great response from patrons, but our first show of the season, The Wiz, is certainly a standout. The legendary Broadway show is back and comes to the Shubert shortly after beginning its national tour on September 26.
Broadway may be in the Shubert’s DNA, but what else can audiences find here?
Audiences love seeing a Broadway show at the Shubert because of the “intimate Broadway theatre” feeling they get here. But our lineup also includes popular artists across comedy, dance and family entertainment—from Ali Wong and American Ballet Theatre to Elmo. There’s a show for everyone.
Where should families start?
Our annual FREE Family Fun Day is the perfect way for parents to introduce their children to the Shubert and the experience of live theatre. On October 25, we open our doors and welcome everyone for a fun day of walking tours and candy stations throughout the theatre.
What belongs on the holiday calendar?
The holiday classic How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical kicks off the season at the Shubert November 18–22. Featuring all the beloved songs and starring the Grinch himself, it’s a show audiences of all ages can enjoy.
And for comedy fans?
We have some big names this season. Ali Wong will perform to a sold-out house on September 20, followed by comedian Nurse John on September 26. His first show sold quickly, so we added a second special late-night show that same day.
What else might audiences not expect?
There’s always something new and unique on the Shubert calendar. With our new Elm City’s Cabaret, audiences can experience new and emerging artists and enjoy free events, including our Trivia Nights.
How do you make a Shubert show into a full night downtown?
Plan to arrive in New Haven on the early side. Before the show, visit one of our downtown restaurant partners for a meal and special discount. You’ll have time to park at one of the area parking facilities, enjoy dinner and still make it to the Shubert for curtain time.
Finally, what are the best ways to save?
Shubert Broadway Subscriptions offer patrons the best seats at the best prices for each of our Broadway shows. Groups of 10 or more receive special discounts to a variety of shows, and college students can get Rush Tickets for most shows two hours before the performance.
